World Heritage
The Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage was adopted in 1972 by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It is one of the most adhered to international legal instruments for the protection of the cultural and natural heritage.This document defines the kind of sites which can be considered for inscription on the World Heritage List, and sets out the duties of State parties in adopting a heritage conservation code of ethics and their role in protecting and preserving such heritage. Portugal signed this Convention in 1979.
Out of 1121 world heritage sites, 869 are cultural, 213 are natural and 39 are mixed properties, 17 of which are located in Portugal, while 11 are world heritage of Portuguese origin.
