National Museum of Contemporary Art

The museum houses a Collection of Portuguese Contemporary Art ranging from the 1850s to the present (paintings, sculptures, drawings, videos, photographs and installations).

The National Museum of Contemporary Art - Chiado Museum was established by a Decree-Law of 26 May 1911. It was the result of splitting the former National Museum of Fine Arts into two museums, one inheriting the pre-1850 collection that became known as the National Museum of Ancient Art and remained at the Palace of Janelas Verdes; and the National Museum of Contemporary Art including the post-1850 collection that is housed at the Convent of St. Francis, next to the Academy of Fine Arts. Located in the historic centre of Lisbon, the Museum is a must for those interested in Portuguese art as it brings together, preserves and exhibits the works of art from the State collection ranging from the 1850s to the present. Its permanent collection boasts paintings, sculptures and drawings dating up to 1975, featuring 19th-century prominent Romantic and Symbolist authors alongside 20th-century Modernist and conceptual art exhibits.Works from 1975 onwards are displayed in temporary exhibitions on specific themes following a regular schedule that sheds light on contemporary production and particularly on Photography and Multimedia.
